짧은 기간 동안 미켈란젤로의 스승이기도 했던 기를란다요는
초기 르네상스 피렌체파 화가. 본명이 도메니코 디 토마소 비고르디
(Domenico di Tomaso Bigordi)인 기를란다이오는 1449년 모든 예술의 중심
피렌체에서 출생했다.
그는 안드레아 델 카스타뇨, 고졸리, 필리포 리피의 영향을 받았으며,
미켈란젤로의 스승으로 더욱 유명하며, 당시 피렌체의 화려하고 다채로운
생활을 흥미롭게 반영해 주는 작품들을 남긴 화가 가운데 한 명이다.
기를린다이오는 성서의 이야기를 마치 그의 후원자였던 메디치가(家)를
중점으로 하는 부유한 피렌체 시민들 사이에 벌어졌던 실제 사건인 것처럼
표현했으며, 인물들을 어떻게 효과적으로 배치하고 어떻게 하면 시각적으로
즐거움을 자아낼 수 있는지 잘 알고 있었다.
가장 초기 작품 중 하나인 1472년 작 <그리스도의 죽음에 대한 애도>에서
그는 죽은 그리스도와 애통해하는 마리아 뒤의 애도자들을 베스푸치가(家)의
사람들의 얼굴을 묘사함으로서, 특정한 종교적 주제를 그와 동시대 인물들의
초상을 넣는 방식을 이미 보여주고 있다. 이와 같은 동시대 생활상을 담은
작품의 가장 좋은 예는 피렌체의 산타 트리니타 교회의 사세티 예배실에
템페라로 그린 제단화와 프레스코화 연작이다.
이 연작은 메디치 은행의 총지배인인 프란체스코 사세티에 의해 주문된 것으로,
주문자의 의도에 따라 기를린다이오는 벽화와 제단화에 사세티 주변인물들의
초상화와 피렌체 도시의 모습이 생생히 그려 넣었다.
또한 기를린다이오의 작품에서는 얀 반 아이크를 비롯한 초기 플랑드르 회화의
정교함도 찾아볼 수 있는데 <성 제롬>이 좋은 예이다.
기를린다이오의 작품은 보다 풍부한 상상력을 보여주는 동시대의 보티첼리와
필리포 리피에 비해 다소 둔해 보일지는 모르지만, 1960년대부터 그의 작품의
사실성과 정확함 등은 더욱 호평되고 있다....
